Curse Words

S#IT! D@MN! F#<K!

Those famous four letter words that we were taught NOT to say as children. Heck, I’m ashamed just typing them. In fact, I still remember the taste of Dial Soap on my tongue after letting a few words fly at Baines Nursery. It’s funny how attention is placed on a few tasteless words, yet we disregard the words that hurt us the most.

Dumb, fat, stupid, ugly, broke, and weak are a few trigger words that attack our subconscious minds. The subconscious mind shapes the way that we feel about ourselves, and even builds invisible walls and limitations in our lives. When I drive through distressed communities with dilapidated homes, failing schools and unauthorized dump sites, I understand that it’s not the CAUSE of urban despair. It’s the EFFECT of subliminal attacks against the subconscious mind.

Let me explain.

Your subconscious mind regards the words and thoughts it receives as FACTUAL, and it works diligently to make those words a reality. So subconsciously, if you think you’re the best, instinctually you’ll work to become the best. But if you believe you’re the worst, your actions will begin to adopt the practices you perceive as being the worst.

Therefore, once your subconscious mind receives “curse words” from those closest to you, it will not only effect the way that you feel about yourself, but you will actively begin shaping your surroundings to fit the image of your perception. This is why we hear clichés like, “Birds of a feather, flock together,” and “You can take the man out the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out the man!”

This is also why it’s so difficult to improve distressed communities. I would argue that once a new development is built in a distressed community, it will soon look like the surrounding area if the development is mismanaged. Ironically, if a distressed community receives an influx of citizens with a positive subconscious mindset, the surrounding area will improve.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was loved and hated by America because he spoke positive affirmation to the subconscious souls of blacks. These affirmation led to blacks challenging the status quo in hopes of improving their lives. Blacks began to question the unjust laws that were accepted and ingrained in the mindset of America like the 1896 case of Plessy vs Ferguson. Words are powerful because if you listen long enough, they compel you to act. Unfortunately, the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr ultimately led to his assassination in 1968.

Studies prove that 95% of your actions, thoughts and beliefs are shaped by your subconscious mind and it takes 66 to 132 days to change it. This is why it’s important to surround yourself with good people and remove the toxic influences in your life.

At Building Blox, we’ve embraced a holistic approach towards improving distressed communities. Part of that is determining the root cause of blight within our neighborhoods. Building a new home means little if the needs of its citizens aren’t addressed. The difference could be as simple as sharing a few kind words.
